A photo report about a trip to art collectives in East Africa. An exchange about social inequality and art as utopia.

T. (Berlin) and E. (Rome) spent the winter of 2024/25 in Kenya and Uganda to meet and collaborate with local artists. In Nairobi, they stayed with the self-organised collectives Mukuru Art Club and Wajukuu in the slums of South B and Lunga Lunga. At Lake Naivasha, they painted spontaneous murals with workers from the Dutch tulip plantations. In Uganda, they got to know the club and cultural scene through the Afrika Arts Kollective, met with local graffiti writers and visited reggae DJs and techno producers near the borders with Congo and Rwanda. The many encounters along the way resulted in paintings, drawings, maps, interviews, sound recordings and photos. The material is to be published and made accessible step by step in cooperation with the collectives.

Ein Foto-Bericht über eine Reise zu Kunstkollektiven in Ostafrika. Ein Austausch über soziale Ungleichheit und Kunst als Utopie.
T. (Berlin) und E. (Rom) waren den Winter 2024/25 in Kenia und Uganda um lokale Künstler*innen kennenzulernen und mit ihnen zusammenzuarbeiten. In Nairobi wohnten sie bei den selbstorganisierten Kollektiven Mukuru Art Club und Wajukuu in den Slums von South B und Lunga Lunga. Am Lake Naivasha malten sie spontane Wandbilder mit Arbeitern aus den niederländischen Tulpenplantagen. In Uganda lernten sie über das Afrika Arts Kollective die Club- und Kulturszene kennen, trafen sich mit lokalen Graffiti-Writern und besuchten Reggae-DJs und Techno-Produzenten nahe der Grenzen zum Kongo und Ruanda. Aus den vielen Begegnungen unterwegs entstanden Malereien, Zeichnungen, Karten, Interviews, Soundaufnahmen und Fotos. Das Material soll schrittweise in Zusammenarbeit mit den Kollektiven veröffentlicht und zugänglich gemacht werden sollen.
